How Municipal Court Warrants Work
Van Buren County has no municipal court handing out city warrants. Michigan puts that job in district court, so a missed court date or an ignored citation in a Van Buren County city ends up on a district court docket, not a city one. That changes the question you should ask. Skip hunting for which city court to call. Ask which district court holds the file and what that court wants you to do next. Note: City police serve their own cases, the Van Buren County sheriff serves county orders, and no city marshal or municipal warrant counter exists here.
Municipal Courts Across Van Buren County
Van Buren County's five largest communities all run police departments. None of them keeps its own court of record.
| City or village | Municipal court | Where its cases file |
|---|---|---|
| South Haven | None located; ordinance code routes civil-infraction citations to district court | 7th District Court West, South Haven |
| Paw Paw | None located; the county seat is a village with a police department | 7th District Court East, Paw Paw |
| Mattawan | None located; ordinances and police service, no municipal docket | 7th District Court, assigned location |
| Hartford | None located; city police page is the municipal contact | 7th District Court, assigned location |
| Bangor | None located; city hall and police page carry local contacts | 7th District Court, assigned location |
The word municipal misleads in Van Buren County. Paw Paw and Mattawan are legally villages, not cities.
Van Buren County Ordinance Citations in Court
South Haven shows how a city ticket moves here. The city's ordinance code sends municipal civil-infraction citations straight to district court. The city writes the ticket. The court holds the case. So the most common search question answers itself: there is no separate city warrant list in Van Buren County, because there is no separate city docket.
Van Buren County Municipal Warrant Checks
Five channels can answer a city citation question in Van Buren County. None is a city warrant portal.
- Read the citation or ordinance notice for the court and case number.
- Search the case in MiCOURT by name and birth year, or by case number.
- Search a ticket in the state ticket and case system by county and court.
- Call the 7th District Court clerk and ask whether an order is open and what comes next.
- Use the city or county FOIA route when the goal is an existing police or agency record.
Every Van Buren County warrant check on a city ticket ends the same way. The court holds the status; the city holds its reports.
Paw Paw Police Is Not a Van Buren County Warrant Clerk
The Van Buren County seat packs several offices into a few blocks, so it is easy to walk into the wrong one. Village Hall sits at 111 E Michigan Ave, the published police address is 114 Harry L. Bush Blvd, and the department takes email at ppd651@pawpaw.net. Officers answer incident and report questions around the clock through 24-hour coverage. They cannot recall a warrant or read you a docket. The village FOIA page takes requests at Foia@pawpaw.net and covers police reports and municipal records, not court status. Note: Because official village materials have listed the police department in more than one place, call before traveling to a station.
Municipal Warrants: What They Show
A citation file in Van Buren County carries the same core fields either way. The ticket's source, city officer or state trooper, does not change them.
| Case number | The district court file identifier, for example 2026-OC-0233 |
|---|---|
| Issuing court | 7th District Court, East or West, whichever holds the file |
| Issuing agency | The city or village department that wrote the citation |
| Ordinance or violation | The municipal code section or traffic violation charged |
| Missed step | Failure to answer the citation or to comply with what the court ordered |
| Fine, costs, or bond | What the court says is owed or required for release |
| Status | Open, recalled, or closed as the clerk reads it that day |
Van Buren County Court Records and City Police Records
People blend two different requests here. A police report stays with the agency that wrote it, so a South Haven incident goes to South Haven and a Paw Paw incident to the village. A court file is different. The court holds it, and court access rules control it rather than FOIA. Asking for every warrant in a city is overbroad, too. It would run into law enforcement exemptions under MCL 15.243, and it would not return a live status answer regardless. Name one record, one case, or one date range instead. Note: Ask which office holds the record before you write a Van Buren County request, and route a court-status question to the clerk rather than a police department.
Clearing a Municipal Court Warrant
A Van Buren County municipal warrant clears through the district court, the same path any other citation case takes.
- Confirm the district location and the case number.
- Ask the clerk whether an order is open and whether the city citation is still the reason.
- Ask whether the court wants payment, an appearance, a motion, or a voluntary appearance under MCR 6.105.
- If a bond is set, use only the process the court describes.
- Get the recall confirmed on the docket.
Caution: Paying a city fine does not automatically recall a court order. Ask the clerk what the payment does and what it does not do.
When a judge sets bond in Van Buren County, the published starting point is the approved bond agency list.

Bond agencies in Van Buren County operate under court rules and county approval. Confirm the court accepts an arrangement before paying an agency.
Which Van Buren County Court Holds a City Case
Case type decides the office in Van Buren County, and four answers cover nearly everything a city resident meets.
- A ticket or ordinance citation belongs to the 7th District Court, East or West.
- A felony that binds over belongs to the 36th Circuit Court on the second floor of the Paw Paw courthouse.
- A child-support enforcement matter belongs to the Friend of the Court at 203 S Niles St, reachable at (269) 657-7734.
- A police report belongs to the department that wrote it.
Van Buren County pages list two numbers for the circuit office, so check which one is current before you call.
Why Capias Is Not a Van Buren County Warrant Term
People who have dealt with courts elsewhere often ask for a capias. In Van Buren County, Michigan paperwork says bench warrant or arrest warrant. A search built on the other word tends to come back empty.
- Capias
- A writ or arrest command used in some states; not the ordinary local label here.
- Bench warrant
- A court's own order after a missed appearance or a failure to comply.
- Ordinance citation
- A municipal code charge filed with the district court.
- Failure to appear
- A missed court date, which is what usually triggers the order.
- Recall
- The court withdraws the warrant, though the case can continue.
Why a City Ordinance Is Not a County Warrant
An ordinance violation and a warrant sit at different stages of the same case in Van Buren County. The citation starts things. A warrant is a later enforcement step a city can skip entirely, which is why a ticket can exist with no warrant record behind it. Only the district court can confirm whether one does. Note: If a city notice mentions a court date, treat that date as the deadline that matters.
